There have been several books written which discuss the possible historical accounts which prompted the writing of some nursery rhymes. Unfortunately, many of these books are out of print, but may be found in your local library. Two that immediately come to mind are The Annotated Mother Goose, by William S. Baring-Gould (1962, Bramhall House...out of print) and The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes by Iona and Peter Opie (Available from Amazon.com for around $55...pricey but worth it.) Check local libraries...Good Luck!
