If you have money to rent with, another possibility would be to get color photocopies of Mother Goose illustrations that are in public domain. You could use something like that from year to year.
Another idea is to borrow Mother Goose Books and mount them on the wall the way plates are displayed, thus not damaging them, but adding a real "Mother Goose Book" theme. (Actually, you can easily make holders from strong jute-type string.)
