"To market . . ." is a "dandling" or "knee-trotting" rhyme. Very small children are bounced in the arms; toddlers are usually sat upon a crossed-knee, facing the adult, and held by both hands.

This is a very old nursery favorite.
To market, to market,
To buy a plum bun;
Home again, home again,
Market is done.
- Worlde of Wordes 1598

To market, to market,
To buy a fat pig;
Home again, home again,
Jiggety, jig.
- Nineteenth century variation
