humor and its use in nursery rhymes

I am writing a paper about the use of humor in nursery rhymes and could use some opinions, quotes, feedback, or thoughts on the topic. For example, why do we teach such nonsense verses at such a young age, and how do adults benefit from the same silly stuff?
